Achilles Tendon Rupture


General information
There are number of bones and joints in the human body. These bones and joints are very important for proper functioning of body. Any disability or abnormality to these bones and joints can adversely affect the normal life of men. There are many types of injuries and medical conditions associated with bones and joints. Some of these are generic and some develop due to complications produced by certain diseases. Achilles tendon rupture is one of such abnormal condition.

Description of Achilles Tendon Rupture
When the Achilles tendon gets tears, such medical condition is termed as Achilles Tendon Rupture. Rupture may be either complete or partial. Though rupture can occur anywhere along the tendon, area above the heel bone is considered as the most common site for development of rupture.

To understand what Achilles Tendon Rupture is, it is important to know what is Achilles tendon. Achilles tendon is a strong, large fibrous cord which connects heel bone and muscles of leg present at the back of lower leg. Achilles tendons help in foot movements like rising on toes, downward pointing of foot and pushing off foot while walking.

Owing to the presence of this large and strong cord in the heel area, Achilles tendons is also known as heel cord.

Symptoms of Achilles Tendon Rupture
There are number of symptoms associated with Achilles Tendon Rupture. Following are some of the common symptoms.

  • Snapping or popping sounds while making foot movements
  • Occurrence of pain around heel area
  • Swollen heel area
  • Acute pain in the lower leg and ankle back.  At times such pain may create hindrance in walking and the patient may not be able to walk properly.
  • You may experience difficulty in bending foot

If the Achilles Tendon is ruptured completely, the individual may not be stand on toes.

Causes attributable to occurrence of Achilles Tendon Rupture
When an healthy tendon subjects to the unexpected, sudden force, the Achilles tendon can get ruptured. Even structural weakening of tendon due to ongoing tendonitis can result in occurrence of rupture.

You may develop Achilles Tendon Rupture even while performing normal activities like gardening. Achilles Tendon Rupture can occur due to frequent stop-and-start foot movements. In simple words, overstretching of tendon, due to various physical activities, can lead to occurrence of rupture.

Treatment of Achilles Tendon Rupture
There are various remedies used for treatment of Achilles Tendon Ruptures such as medication and surgery. The medication in Achilles Tendon Rupture treatment is aimed at relieving pain and reducing swelling. However, surgery is most common treatment option. The affected tendons are repaired surgically. There are certain medical aids like walking foot and cast which may be prescribed for Achilles tendon rupture treatment. These surgical aids help torn ends of tendons to reattach with each other on their own. Though the recovery period in non-surgical approach is considerably longer, the rate of re-rupture is higher in this method.
