Burning Foot Syndrome


General Information
Human body consists of various joints, muscles, bones, circulatory system, nervous system, respiratory system etc. Each part and system has its own importance and any abnormality developed by any body part or body system adversely affects the normal functioning of the body. It is due to the proper functioning of various parts that we are able to perform our regular activities and leading healthy life. Feet are undoubtedly and important part of our body system. Imagine what will happen if your feet get paralyzed owing to injury or as a result of complications produced by some diseases. There are number of factors that can develop abnormality of foot. Burning foot syndrome is one of such abnormality. However, this condition is not very serious.

Burning Foot Syndrome
Burning foot syndrome is one of the common medical conditions found mostly in people above the age of 50 years. However, this medical condition can develop in people of any age group.

Common symptoms of Burning Foot Syndrome
As indicative from the nomenclature, burning sensation is the main symptom of burning foot syndrome. This burning symptom may be accompanied by other common symptoms such as swelling, redness and stinging of the foot. However, in most of the cases burning and stinging are major symptoms.

Causes behind occurrence of Burning Foot Syndrome
There are number of factors that could contribute towards development of Burning Foot Syndrome.  Following are some of the most common factors.

Prevention of Burning Foot Syndrome
Like any other medical condition, ‘avoid’ is the golden world for prevention of burning foot syndrome. Wearing of foot wear that does not fit properly is major cause behind development of this condition. Avoid using such foot wear and use foot wear that fit properly and provide comfort. Avoid exposure to substances that could trigger occurrence of burning foot syndrome.

Treatment of Burning Foot Syndrome
There are various remedies available for treating burning foot syndrome. The treatment is determined based on the root cause of occurrence of burning foot syndrome. You may have to undergo certain medical tests, such as x-ray, MRI and blood test to ascertain the cause behind appearance of this syndrome. Following are the some of the most commonly used treatments.
  • Use of topical creams
  • Magnetic therapy
  • If burning foot syndrome is caused due to fungal infection, such infection can be treated with antibiotics
  • Reducing alcohol intake or smoking
  • Use of properly fitting socks and shoes that provide proper ventilation to foot.
