It’s the inability to consistently keep or simply get an erection sustainable for sexual intercourse. But when it’s specifically erectile dysfunction it means that none of the above mentioned are involved.
ED the abbreviate form of erectile dysfunction in medical terms, can become a total inability to have or achieve a respectable penis erection. The person infected with this problem will have an inconsistent tendency to sustain erections. Erectile dysfunction generally can be related to physical cause, such as injury, side effects of drugs or a disease especially when it comes to older men. Any kind of injury which can cause disorder or impair the blood flow of the male sex organ can be a potential consequence of erectile dysfunction. The incident of impotence tends to increase with age. Approximately 15% to 25% of men with 65 years of age are experiencing
erectile dysfunction while men with 40 years of age are only 5% although, erectile dysfunction is an inevitable part of the aging process of men.
Your lifestyle choices and the state of your health can also contribute to erectile dysfunction. Having vascular problems and heart diseases may also increase the chances of having erectile dysfunction. Obesity, smoking, and lack of exercise can also cause this problem.  Too much smoking decreases the production of testosterone causing hormonal abnormalities affecting the blood flow in the arteries and veins.

There are also surgical procedures that can attribute to erectile dysfunction. Radical bladder and prostate cancer surgeries can damage the arteries and the nerves which are near the penis leading to erectile dysfunction. Any injury that can happen to the spinal cord, bladder, prostate, and pelvis most especially to the penis can lead to a possible erectile dysfunction. These injuries can result to erectile dysfunction by harming the fibrous tissues, arteries, smooth muscles and nerves of the corpora cavernosa. The corpora cavernosa along with the corpus spongiosum are the long filled cavity that runs the length of the penis.
Erectile dysfunction can also be the side effect of some common medicines such as tranquilizers, antidepressants, antihistamines, appetite suppressants, ulcer drugs and blood pressure drugs. To add more to the list, psychological factors can cause from 10% to 20% of erectile dysfunction cases. These factors are depression, fear of sexual failure, low self-esteem, guilt anxiety and stress.

The good thing with erectile dysfunction is, the problem can be treated at all ages. This problem has affected almost 15 to 30 million American men. With the help of research advances, number of treatments have already been created and tested to cure this problem. These advances made it easier for most men to accept it and expanded their option to seek for its treatment. There are procedures like injectable medication, implants, suppositories, and vacuum devices which offer treatments for erectile dysfunction.
