Proctitis


General Information
Different systems situated in the human body ensure healthy life for us. Proper functioning of these body systems is essential for maintaining proper health and enhancing resistance power. Each system has its own specific function, way of functioning and consists of number of body organs. These organs or systems can develop certain abnormalities and lead to occurrence of disease symptoms owing to various factors. Digestive system is one of the important systems of our human body which comprises of organs like, stomach, liver, spleen, various glands, intestine, colon and rectum. The last organ of the system may develop certain abnormalities and Proctitis is one of such abnormalities.

Definition of Proctitis
When the inflammation of rectum lining occurs such condition is termed as Proctitis. The rectum lining is also known by other name rectal mucosa. Proctitis condition can be either of short duration or of prolonged periods.

Causes responsible for occurrence of Proctitis
There are number of caused which can contribute towards development of Proctitis. At times, Proctitis may appear as a result of side effect of certain medical treatments such as use of antibiotics and radiation therapies. Some other disorders like Crohn’s disease, sexually transmitted diseases and ulcerative colitis may produce complications that could lead to occurrence of Proctitis. Bacterial infections, malfunction of rectal nerves, rectal injuries and allergies are some of the other common causes responsible for development of Proctitis condition.
Common sings and symptoms of Proctitis
There are number of symptoms associated with the occurrence of Proctitis. Recurrent and persistent bowel movement sensation or urge of bowel movement is considered as the main symptom of Proctitis. The following are some of the other common symptoms.
  • Constipation
  • Abdominal pain, especially in the left side of the abdomen
  • Occurrence of mucus, with stool, through rectum
  • Painful bowel movements
  • Rectal bleeding
  • Fever
  • Anorectal pain
  • Soreness of rectal region
  • Feeling of fullness of rectal
Diagnosis of Proctitis
Sigmoidoscopy and proctoscopy is the most common test conducted for diagnosis of Proctitis. In this test your physician will examine the inner side of rectum with the help of surgical equipments (either proctoscope or sigmoidoscope). In some cases, a small piece of rectal tissue is removed and examined for presence of infections or symptoms of disease.

Treatment of Proctitis
There are some remedies available for treating Proctitis. Cause behind occurrence of Proctitis condition and stage of the condition play a greater role in deciding right type of treatment. Following are some of the common methods used for treating Proctitis.
  • Use of antibiotics
  • Use of corticosteroids (5-aminosalicyclic acid)
  • Surgery.  However, this option is exercised rarely, only in severe cases.
